Probably one of the most confusing products within the beauty industry is foundation. It is so personal and particular to your skin, and there’s so many different brands out there. And don’t even get me started on selecting the correct color! But it is possible to find your perfect foundation match, and I don’t just mean a perfect shade match! So we’re going to go over things like the undertone of skin, skin type, coverage, and different ways you can customize your foundation to suit your unique needs in this master foundation series!

Did you know it’s not enough to just match your skin tone when it comes to an excellent foundation match? That’s right – knowing your undertone can make all the difference, especially if you’re using a foundation with higher coverage.

Undertone of skin meaning

An undertone is a subdued or muted tone of color, and when it comes to skin there are three: warm, cool, and neutral.

  • Warm means you have yellow, peach, or golden undertones to your skin;
  • cool means bluish pink; and
  • neutral means…well, neither.

If you’ve ever purchased a foundation that just looks off then it’s likely because you weren’t using the correct undertone.

When purchasing foundation according to your undertone, you want to purchase foundation that has juuuuust a hint of the correct color. You want just a smidge of either pink or yellow – too much, even if it is your correct undertone, won’t look natural.

How do I know the undertone of my skin?

  • If the veins in your wrists appear green, then you have a warm undertone. If they appear blue or purple then you’re cool.
  • If gold jewelry looks best on you then you’re warm. If silver looks best then you’re cool.
  • If you look best in white or black clothes then you’re cool. If browns are more flattering then you’re warm.

What if I’m neither warm nor cool?

If you couldn’t definitively answer “warm” or “cool” to those questions, then you may just be neutral. That means you can swing either way with your foundation.

Try both a warm and cool undertone and see which you prefer.

For example, I’m a neutral undertone and I prefer to swing yellow (warm) instead of pink. I still have some red spots from acne scarring, and I find that a pink foundation just brings out that redness for me.

Try samples when you can.

If possible, be sure to try samples of foundations when you can! At the very least, always purchase makeup from retailers who accept returns.
