Health Hacks on a Budget

Pin me!

I’m totally psyched about the fact that everyone is wanting to get healthy these days! People are really starting to pay attention to what they eat and are starting to exercise regularly too. But I’ll be honest, getting healthy can be expensive! I mean, have you seen some of these gym memberships?! Some of these places charge as much as a modest car payment! And don’t even get me started on the price of healthy food versus junk food. When salad kits cost more than a box of cookies, I think we as a nation have a problem. But I’ve been on this health journey for almost two years now, so I’ve figured out some budget friendly health hacks for you!

Here are 5 cheap health hacks! #fitfam Click To Tweet

Drink more water

When you’re thirsty, reach for water. I’m not one of those that pushes for a certain amount of ounces per day – I’m much more about drinking intuitively. But staying hydrated is very important! Other than coffee in the morning, I try to stick to water. Yes, flavored, sparkling waters count, as long as they don’t have any other ingredients.

Speaking of flavored, sparkling water…

Ditch soda

Eliminating sugary drinks from your daily life is one of the best things you can do for your health! While I am guilty of indulging in Coke Zero Sugar from time to time, flavored sparkling waters are what I’ve mainly replaced sodas with. Sparkling water is a bit more expensive than soda, but it’s not too bad.

Get adequate amounts of sleep

This healthy hack is super budget friendly because it costs you zero dollars! According to the Sleep Foundation, adults ages 18-64 should be getting about 7-9 hours of sleep.

Adequate amounts of sleep are important because our brain does a lot of important things while we sleep, such as convert short-term memories into long-term memories. Sleeping can also regulate your mood and appetite.

Wake and go to sleep at a consistent time everyday

Again – another one that costs zero dollars! It’s best for your circadian rhythm if you go to bed and wake at around the same time every day.

Two words: coconut oil

Coconut oil is a great, all around healthful item. It’s multi uses make it a great value too!

Ways you can use coconut oil:

  • Great for grilling and roasting because it has a high smoke point.
  • Slather from the neck down in coconut oil after a shower for supple, soft skin.
  • Soak hair in coconut oil for a luxurious and cheap hair mask before showering.
  • Mix a bit of sugar into coconut oil for an affordable lip scrub.

Note of caution: I know lots of people swear by using coconut oil as a facial moisturizer. However, coconut oil is technically high on the comedogenic scale, meaning it can clog your pores. If you have acne prone skin, I don’t recommend using it on your face.

Do you have any healthy hacks to share? What are some ways you stay healthy without breaking the bank?

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for part two!

I understand the premise of the ubiquitous “they” stating one SHOULD get 7-9 hours of sleep each night but it seems they’ve forgotten two very important aspects: 1) PARENTS, especially of young children. Most of them often DON’T get that 7-9 hours of sleep, for a variety of reasons and 2) they’re making a blanket statement, trying to fill a mold that doesn’t exist. Yes, our bodies need sleep to regenerate and get healthy BUT not all of us are wired the same. Some of us need more sleep, some of us need less. It really depends on the individual.

At any rate, thank you for sharing these life hacks. I will definitely be trying out the lip scrub one. LOVE it! And I might even have my daughter try out the coconut oil mask on her mane of hair!

    Rock on!

This is true. However, just because parents don’t get that much sleep doesn’t mean they don’t NEED that much sleep. But like you said, everyone is different! I know some people who regularly only sleep 5-6 hours a night and that’s just… how they are! It blows my mind, but to each their own. I know for me personally I need more sleep than that. Enjoy the lip scrub and coconut oil hair mask!
